Common Questions About Tummy Tuck Surgery (abdominoplasty)

Abdominoplasty is commonly known as a "tummy tuck." It is an intense surgical procedure involving the removal of excess skin and fat and the tightening of muscles in the abdominal wall. This procedure has shown dramatic results by reducing the appearance of the protruding abdomen that does not respond to diet and exercise. Abdominoplasty has been particularly helpful to women who have had multiple pregnancies that have stretched their abdominal muscles and skin beyond where they can return to normal. Individuals who have lost skin elasticity related to age or weight loss also can benefit from this procedure.

There are three types of tummy tucks. A mini-abdominoplasty repairs the lower abdominal wall and involves removal of the fat (shortest scar). A standard abdominoplasty tightens the abdominal wall skin and removes the excess skin and fat (standard scar). An extended abdominoplasty tightens the abdomen and flanks, or sides (longest scar extending around the flanks onto the lower back).

When planning your tummy tuck surgery, your plastic surgeon will evaluate your health and assess your abdominal region. Your abdomen is assessed for fat deposits and skin tone to help aid in the way your surgery is performed. In our office, the surgeon will see you for your initial consultation and one other time before surgery. An appointment before tummy tuck surgery will be scheduled to review in more detail your pre- and post-operative care instructions. Your plastic surgeon will want to monitor your progress closely and ensure you have the best results possible, so expect to visit the day following surgery.

Tummy tuck surgery is more commonly performed under general anesthesia, although a regional or epidural injection with sedation may also be used. It is generally performed as an outpatient procedure.

During a tummy tuck, the surgeon will make a long incision from hipbone to hipbone just above the pubic area. Another incision is made around the navel. The skin is then separated from the abdominal wall to reveal the vertical muscles. The muscles are tightened by pulling them together and stitching them into their new position. This process will result in a firmer abdomen and a reduction in the waistline. The skin is then stretched over the abdomen and extra skin is removed; a new incision is made for the navel. Finally, the incision is sutured and dressing is applied. A temporary tube may be placed in the suture line to help reduce excess fluid built up due to surgery. Post-op drains are removed at 3-5 days.

In addition, The Centre, P.C. uses an autologous platelet gel during surgery, derived from the patient's own blood, to significantly reduce intraoperative bleeding and oozing, minimize bruising, decrease post-operative pain and speed healing.

After tummy tuck surgery, your abdomen will be swollen and you will probably feel some pain and discomfort. You may not be able to stand straight at first, but will be able to walk shortly after surgery. Some of the sutures will be taken out within a week and others will be taken out later. A support garment may be worn to help reduce swelling and give extra support to the abdomen. In a few weeks or months, you should be back to feeling like yourself.

For tummy tuck surgery, The Centre, P.C. recommends the use of the VitaMedica Surgery Program, a comprehensive pre- and post-surgery nutritional supplement system designed specifically for patients undergoing extensive surgical procedures.

The Centre, P.C. offers several soothing body treatments that can ease the discomfort and swelling associated with surgery.

Your surgeon may suggest liposuction to enhance the results of your tummy tuck procedure. Breast procedures may also contribute to the desired look.

In addition, The Centre, P.C. carries several premium designs of naval rings to help you celebrate your new, flatter tummy. This procedure is performed in a discreet setting in our office.
